The ability to handle stress is often seen as something intrinsic to a person's character – either you can or you can't. But the fact is, managing stress is simply a matter of having the right knowledge and the appropriate techniques. Everyone can learn to handle stress.
There are five different types of stress:
Working with Wellbeing has tools to deal with them all – preventing stress makes more economic sense than treating its consequences. When a person feels at ease both physically and mentally, they are much more able to interact and cooperate with others, and feel more empathy for their colleagues. This makes teamwork much more effective. To understand other people, it is vital to have a good understanding of yourself. Just as a plant depends on nutritious soil, sunlight and water to flourish and grow, a business depends on a healthy, happy and motivated workforce. As most people spend 30-40 hours a week in their place of work, the quality of that experience will greatly influence their performance, health and contentment. This in turn will have far-reaching effects upon the growth and performance of the entire company.
Stress diminishes pleasure, creativity and productivity. It can cause feelings of alienation, of a life dominated by future worry, preventing an individual from living in the present moment. And the cost to society is high. Sick employees are expensive so it is vital, especially in today's tough economic climate, to hold on to them, to prevent them becoming sick. To do that, they have to be able to handle stress. In today's tough economic climate, companies often have to make sacrifices in order to survive, never mind grow. As a result, people often have more work to do than they can comfortably manage, and stress levels rise. This in turn is producing a multitude of stress-related ailments, such as sleeplessness and anxiety. Stress involves tension, both physical and mental, as well as irritation, a loss of patience and motivation, and reduced focus, tolerance, memory capacity and immunity to illness. Obviously, this is not conducive to achieving optimum performance, contentment and economic growth.
The movements in the three modules have a preventive as well as a curative effect upon conditions such as RSI (mouse arm), headache, tensions due to incorrect posture or repetitive movements, mental and emotional stress, high blood pressure, breathing difficulties, sleeplessness and tiredness. They lead to an increased awareness of habits that reduce an individual’s performance and sense of wellbeing. More importantly they give people the tools to correct and even prevent these conditions. They include simple ways to prevent stress reactions taking place, which will strengthen the immunity system and calm the mental fluctuations to enhance clear thinking, memory and the ability to focus.
Working With Wellbeing offers your company three modules, given to groups of maximum 20 people at a time at their place of work, by experienced yoga teacher – in English and/or Dutch.
Clothing should be light and loose fitting and shoes must be removed during all modules. If individuals have physical limitations or other problems, these will be taken into account and exercises adapted as appropriate given. All modules will be given in English and/or Dutch.
Reflection will be centred upon how an individual has recognized his or her strengths, weaknesses, ambitions and needs during the modules and how these have changed.
The modules can be given in the workplace, or, if necessary, other locations can be arranged. The content of the modules can be adapted to fit a particular type of work, taking account, for example, of prolonged sitting, tasks carried out at the computer, prolonged standing or heavy, physically taxing work..
